I just got done reading an article from RWW. The title of the article is: Location Based Ads a Goldmine, Says Survey – 50% of Users Take Action. So you can imagine this headline when I saw it in Google Reader immediately caught my attention, made me slobber all over myself, and fall off my chair.
I love this part especially:
“Perhaps more surprising is the level of engagement between these location-based service users and the geo-targeted ads. Nearly half of those who noticed ads while using a location-based service took some action.”

I just got through reading this article from ReadWriteStart entitled “Startups and the Lure of (Hyper)Local.” The article is basically talking about how many startups now are focusing on hyper-local. It is quite amazing how with the advent of GPS enabled phones how many startups can exist. I think we can all think of some great ideas for some location-aware companies. I just hope that you consider AdSpeek location based advertising when creating them.

A recent article on Techcrunch brings up the issue and you can read more about it here: http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/17/open-database-places/
With the proliferation of location and how many apps and products are being formed around location. A big part of that is points of interest data. Applications like Foursquare, Gowalla, … all require information for places around you. Now you would think this would be a lot easier to get and you can use Google to search places by category or by some query term to return places around you. You could also license data from places like Localeze or InfoUSA. The problem is see with the issue as it stands today comes down to 2 things:
1) Categorization
2) Uniquely identify a place

As everyone has probably seen, Gray Powell is the guy who “accidentally” left his next-gen iPhone in a bar last month.

One thing that is interesting is that he is former NC State University student. Living in the Research Triangle area it is interesting to see an NC State student doing some cool work at a “cool” company. It seems he was working on part of the phone that actually makes calls.
Although this was an unfortunate event and hopefully he was not punished too severely I hope to see more local students doing cool and interesting things.

We have created a video that shows how to use the AdSpeek SDK for tracking page views and/or ad views. Sometimes app publishers have their own ads or content they want to track. Using the AdSpeek SDK for tracking allows you to track that information along with location of where that information was displayed.

Last night I created a YouTube showing how to use the AdSpeek SDK within an iPhone project with Interface Builder. The are several ways to create views for the iPhone. One of them is by creating the view in Interface Builder, hooking it up to a UIViewController and then populating the contents from code. This demo creates a simple iPhone project that does just that and shows how easy it is to integrate the AdSpeek SDK when defining the view through Interface Builder.
You can find more info at: http://developers.adspeek.com as well as in the README.txt that ships with the SDK, but there is nothing like a good ‘ole video to help out.

According to a recent Compete study, 74% of smartphone owners use their phone for personal uses. And it seems a large number of people use their phone while shopping or to help them save money and find reviews on products. If you have not yet heard about Anthony Johnson from the Montana Grizzlies basketball team I am sure you will in the upcoming NCAA basketball tourney. To sum it up, Montana was down by 20 at the half in last night’s Big Sky tournament final to Weber State. The game seemed over. But the second half spelled a different story. Anthony Johnson who 4 years ago was washing dishes having given up on his basketball career after high school. He met a girl who also played basketball and watched him play pickup at the YMCA.

I was reading a special report in last week’s Economist called Data Data Everywhere and I am sure by the title you can gather it’s about data. More specifically it is about the abundance of data in our world and how since we now have all of this data we will need to start spending time making sense of it. Having a degree in Machine Learning this piqued my interest especially because Machine Learning techniques will be at the core of learning patterns and making sense of it all.
